某人在一座岛屿上发现一盏灯笼。与所有的故事一样，当他擦拭灯笼时，从里面走出一个精灵。
精灵同意满足他三个愿望，但却有一个附带条件：“无论他想要得到什么，他的妻子都会得到他所得到东西的二倍。”
这个条件使这位正处于半离婚状态的男子非常苦恼。他想好之后便开始对精灵讲他的三个愿望。
A man found a lantern on an island. As in all stories, when he wiped the lantern, a spirit came out of it. The genie agrees to grant him three wishes, but on one condition: "Whatever he wishes for, his wife will get twice as much as he gets."
This condition distressed the man, who was in a state of semi-divorce. After he had thought this over, he began to tell the genie his three wishes.
“首先，我想拥有100万英磅。”

"My second wish," said the man, "is to have a huge mansion." His wish came true again, and his wife got a mansion twice his size.
